‘What we’ve done and what we need to do’

Since receiving feedback on our project proposal, we have amended several aspects of our research skills project. We feel the feedback was very useful, and as a group we now feel more clear and ready to continue with our project.

Each member of our group has now chosen a case study to look at and have provided specific examples, which have all been posted on the blog. From these case studies we were able to form a survey, for which we have sent the pilot out for feedback. Once we have received feedback on our survey, each member of our group will send it out to ten people. Whilst waiting for feedback we are all individually contributing to a literature review which we will compile in the same meeting as looking over our survey results.

Our next steps towards completing our project will be to collect and analyse the results of the surveys, which we intend to do next week. Once we have analysed our findings we will be able to start putting together our presentation, ready for week 11.

  1. This is a very clear summary, very nicely and concisely written. My only query is about what exactly the survey is finding out. I've seen all the data examples posted here - and there's certainly some quite offensive material. I'm not sure I understand how it's going to be used, and with whom. Can you just explain that - and reassure me about the ethical and potential offence aspects of the project?!

  2. Any update / responses to my earlier comment?

  3. With further discussions and responses from our pilot questionnaires we have decided that we need to narrow our focus to how language is perceived differently from the two age groups we are looking at (18-29 year olds and 30+. When we do our analysis we shall be looking at whether taboo words have diminished in there ability to offend by comparing the responses of two age ranges. We shall be writing a advanced ethics post but we do believe the offensive material is necessary. If you are satisfied with our consideration of the ethics behind our project, do we have your permission to send out the questionnaire as soon as possible?

    1. I've responded to an email message which seemed to have overlooked the posting and commenting here; I've sent it to everyone in this group and hope we can finalise the details of this process soon.
